COVID-19: Secretary-General Calls for Global Ceasefire

In an appeal issued on Monday, UN Secretary-General António Guterres urged warring parties across the world to lay down their weapons and support the fight against the common enemy: COVID-19. ‘The fury of the virus illustrates the folly of war’, he underlined. ‘That is why today, I am calling for an immediate global ceasefire in all corners of the world. It is time to put armed conflict on lockdown and focus together on the true fight of our lives’. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) hosted a one day conference for the Humanitarian Impacts of Nuclear Weapons (HINW) on Monday, March 2nd, 2020. This convening provided the opportunity for a lot of fact-based discussions, and in particular, considered the risk of nuclear weapons use has increased since the previous HINW conference.
