Over 40.3 million people have been in modern slavery at any given time in 2016. According to the UN and International Labour Organisation, women, men and children are exploited for forced labour, commercial sex, and domestic work in all corners of the world. Although many think that this issue affects only distant countries, there was 150 potential victims of modern slavery and human trafficking recorded in Scotland in 2016 alone, but Police estimates put the actual number much higher.

 

United Nations House Scotland organises the conference on ‘Human trafficking and modern slavery in Scotland’, sponsored by Christina McKelvie MSP. The conference would be held on the 23rd of March 2018, 10am - 5pm at the Scottish parliament.

 

The aim our event is to raise awareness and strengthen collaboration among Scotland’s public, private and third sector to break the chains of modern slavery.

 

The event will host policymakers, corporate leaders, practitioners and world-leading researchers who focus their work on this global human rights challenge. The keynote address will be delivered by Christina McKelvie MSP, Kevin Hyland OBE, UK Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner, Alison McGregor, CEO of HSBC Scotland and Kevin Bales, Deputy Director of Wilberforce Institute.
