The Poverty Truth Community (PTC) held their annual event to mark the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty on Monday 17 October at George Square in Glasgow.
UNHS is currently working in partnership with PTC on our Human Rights and Child Poverty project, in which we held a Roundtable on the topic and will be releasing our follow-up report soon.

Currently more than one in four children in the country are officially recognised as living in poverty and this figure is likely to continue increasing in the next decade if there are no significant changes in policy. The COVID-19 pandemic has only worsened the situation as families living in poverty are put under further financial strain from reduced working hours, furlough and job loss.
It is critical that we recognise child poverty as a rights-based issue and that we take action now to prevent a further increase in child poverty. Humanitarian principles must be the foundation and building block for discussions on this issue. Indeed, poverty is a violation of a child’s rights.
