We the peoples: A conversation with UN Secretary-General

On Sunday we came together virtually to celebrate the anniversary of the first-ever General Assembly, held in London 75 years ago.

In a digital event hosted by the UK Government, UN75 and Project Everyone, the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres gave a live address to mark the historic moment.

During his remarks he remembered the events that led to the founding of the UN in 1945; reflected on the legacy of the UK at the UN, including the impact of British internationalist pioneers such as Sir Brian Urquhart and Dame Margaret Anstee; and highlighted how international cooperation is needed today more than ever as the world tackles crises such as the Covid-19 pandemic and climate change.

In addition, he presented the final report of the UN75 global conversation, noting that climate action was the top priority for people across the world, and engaged with youth activists on key questions around climate change, gender equality, health and security.

United Nations Green

Sunday also marked another milestone moment as it was officially announced that an area outside Methodist Central Hall Westminster would be renamed “United Nations Green”.

This designation comes after a tireless campaign led by David Wardrop, Chair of UNA Westminster, who shared the news during Methodist Central Hall’s special UN75 service on Sunday.

UNA-UK would like to congratulate David and everyone involved in the campaign, it is a timely and welcome landmark to commemorate the site of the first General Assembly.
