Scotland Launch of the UNESCO GEM Report

Panelists (L-R) – Dr. Alasdair McWilliam (UNESCO), Mr. Atishay Mathur (UN House), Dr. Samantha Ross (Link Community Development)

The United Nations House was delighted to launch the 2017-2018 UNESCO Global Education Monitoring Report, ‘Accountability in Education: Meeting our Commitments’ on the 29th of November 2017. The Scotland launch combined a presentation on the Report by UNESCO, expert responses to the report, along with a high-level expert panel, and an interactive question and answer session on the Report.

The UN House’s Atishay Mathur presented his considerations and reflections on the GEM Report, followed by a panel discussion with Dr. Alasdair McWilliam (UNESCO) and Dr. Samantha Ross (Link Community Development) moderated by Dr. Gari Donn (UN House). Atishay’s presentation from the day can be found here. And, the agenda for the launch can be found on the UNESCO website. Atishay’s recently concluded research focused on proposing effectiveness measures to make governments and government run programmes more accountable. These findings have since been shared with UNESCO GEM team.

The event brought together a range of education stakeholders including policy makers, teachers, students and civil society representatives to discuss the evidence based findings from the report and ways for greater collaboration between education stakeholders to ensure the provision of equitable, quality education for all. The GEM Report assesses the progress towards SDG 4, its 10 targets, and other related education targets across SDGs. This year’s Report will also investigate accountability issues in education, analysing how relevant actors (government, schools, teachers, parents, students, international organisations, and the private sector) can provide education more effectively, efficiently, and equitably.
