WILPF 2019 Autumn Seminar: Women Go Green for Peace

The UK section of the Women’s International League for Peace & Freedom (WILPF) will be hosting its annual Autumn Seminar on Saturday, 23 November, at SOAS, University of London in the Brunei Gallery Lecture Theater from 10AM - 6PM. The theme of this year’s seminar will be Eco-Feminism and Pacifism, which addresses the pressing concerns of conflict on the environment and disproportionately on women’s lives. While many organisations focus on important environmental issues, WILPF UK identifies the critical intersections of pacifism, feminism, and environmental preservation. For this year’s seminar, WILPF will have a phenomenal line up of speakers, including:

  • H.E. Dr. Adrienne Diop, Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Gender Expert & Former Senegalese Ambassador

  • Kate Metcalf, Women’s Environmental Network

  • Dr. Keina Yoshida, Centre for Women, Peace and Security, London School of Economics and Political Science

  • Dr. Margo Okazawa-Rey, Mills College & Combahee River Collective

  • Margrethe Tingstad, WILPF International

  • Roslyn Cook, WILPF UK

  • Dr. Susan Ringler, Green Cambridge & The Haiti Initiative (SUD

UK WILPF’s Autumn Seminar will focus on the implications of conflict on the environment, highlighting the unique and disproportionate impact of environmental destruction on women’s lives. Environmental damage such as pollution of air, water and land, the unregulated plundering of natural resources including oil and plastics, and the negative impacts of mass population movements on the environment are common in times of war and, in some cases, can be irreversible. This environmental destruction chronically affects local populations--even after the conflict has ended.

Join WILPF for an important discussion with experts and activists and learn what you can do to be part of the solution!
