Human Rights Day - 70th Anniversary of the UDR

Updated: Aug 3, 2020

Eleanor Roosevelt and Human Rights Declaration

Today is the 70th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

In 1950, the UN General Assembly proclaimed 10 December as Human Rights Day in order to bring to the attention of 'the peoples of the world’ the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as the common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations.

The United Nations Human Rights Council was established in 2005. The council has taken many unprecedented steps to ensure human rights worldwide... "The Council's newest mechanism -- a universal periodic review of each country's human rights record -- is turning out to be an effective tool for ensuring that every state is called to account for its human rights performance".
